Asbestos Waste Dumped in Kitui Removed

Efforts have begun to properly dispose the asbestos waste that was buried in the Kiongwe hills, Kitui East area in March 2017.

Activities to remove the waste started on Wednesday, 11th October and were supervised by the Kitui county governor, Charity Ngilu. According to Ngilu, the activities to remove the toxic waste are expected to cost Ksh. 5.6 million and will be financed by the county government.

The governor had earlier in September promised area residents that the asbestos would be removed.

The asbestos waste was reportedly buried in the area in March 2017 by Sonata Kenya Limited with authorization from NEMA. Further reports indicate that the approval from NEMA was given without due process considering that the area is a catchment for the Thua River and has a slope of over 60% which makes it unsuitable for disposal of the hazardous materials.
