Building under Construction in Kisii Collapses
The four story building under construction in Kisii County collapsed on the morning of Wednesday killing 3 people and injuring at least 24 others.
A four story building under construction in Mwembe area, Kisii County collapsed on the morning of Wednesday, 11 October 2017 killing 3 people and injuring at least 24 others. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals including the Kisii hospital. It is suspected that 30 people were trapped in debris.
The first emergency responders who are believed to be the bodaboda operators pulled out four people from the rubble. They were shortly joined by County Emergency Teams and multi-agency stakeholders including, National Construction Authority (NCA), National Buildings Inspectorate (NBI), National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU). The Kenya Defence Forces Disaster Response Unit (KDF - DRU) have also been activated and are expected to deliver some equipment at the site to assist with rescue operations.
The Deputy Director and Communication Officer at NDMU has appealed to individuals or institutions that may have drills and cutters to support the search and rescue operations. They have also advised members of public that are not directly engage in the operations to keep off and allow emergency services providers to do their work.
It is barely a year since a similar incidence occurred after a seven floor building collapsed in central Kisii killing 8 people.
