CGG to conduct 3D Seismics data Acquisition Off Mozambique Coast

Acquisition of a new multi-client survey of up to 40,000 km² of 3D data over the Beira High in the Zambezi Delta, covering blocks Z5-C and Z5-D and surrounding open acreage is set to commence next week.

This survey commissioned by Mozambique's Instituto Nacional de Petroleo (INP) will be conducted by CGG and will form part of a comprehensive, fully integrated geoscience program that will deliver a better overall understanding of the prospectivity of the region. Marine gravity and magnetic data will be acquired simultaneously with the seismic to accelerate regional interpretation.

According to Noticias Online the survey, which will last until April 2018, will be carried out over a distance of 20 kilometres from the coast of Zambézia and Nampula provinces, covering the districts of Memba, Ilha de Moçambique, Nacala-a-Velha, Nacala Porto and Mossuril in Nampula; Quelimane, Nicoadala, Namacurra, Maganja da Ciosa, Chinde and Pebane in Zambezia.

Speaking during a public participation forum held in the city of Quelimane on Thursday, Bruno Webder a representative from Petrolium said that issues of maritime safety, environmental impact and safety of marine species had all been taken care of, paving way for the exploration activities.

Representatives of civil society organisations present at the seminar have expressed concerns about the fate of revenues from oil and gas exploration, but have agreed that the activities can improve the economy.

Mozambique is expected to become a major exporter of natural gas following the discovery of over 180 tcf of natural gas reserves in the Rovuma basin by Texas-based Anadarko and ENI (Italy).
