New Regulations to Improve Building Safety
A recent audit of buildings which revealed that up to 50 percent of buildings across the country are not completely safe for occupation.

The National Buildings Inspectorate (NBI) is pushing for the enactment of a law to ensure stricter enforcement of building codes. This is according to the secretary of NBI Moses Nyakiongora who said that a recent audit of buildings which revealed that up to 50% of buildings across the country are not completely safe for occupation.
The proposed regulation will provide for inspections every five years for all occupied buildings that have more than three floors. The regulations will also empower all professional bodies in the construction sector to enforce ethics in the industry.
A multi-sectoral committee on unsafe structures is currently conducting a nationwide campaign to sensitize the public on the danger of unsafe buildings.
According to NBI, the demand for housing is causing property developers to take shortcuts in constructing houses.
